TitleEbook Central: Print or download a chapter or page range - how-to, limits
Summary
Content
Printing or downloading a chapter or page range do the same thing - both options create a PDF that does not expire. The PDF can then be printed anytime or read offline.

If you're browsing without having signed in (some Ebook Central sites allow this), you may be prompted to sign in before you can print or download.

In the PDF online reader:

To select by page range, click the printer icon for “Print to PDF” found at the top right.

  • If printing/downloading-to-PDF more than the current page, determine page numbers by viewing the page number displayed by the reader at the top right.
  • If the page numbers seem off, see below.
  • It's okay to use page numbers like iii, iv, xi, etc. as applicable.

To select by chapter, click the PDF icon for “Chapter Download”.

  • If the chapter is longer than the number of pages you have left to print/download, an error will be displayed with the number of pages left. You’ll need to instead print-to-PDF a page range within your limit.
  • If the book has sections or parts, and the chapters are nested under those, the system may default to printing the entire section or part. In this case, the number of pages will likely exceed your limit, so you’ll need to enter the page range instead, or you can print individual chapters or subsections from the book's Detail page.
Note that “Chapter Download” does not offer page range download. To download a page range the “Print to PDF” option must be used.

In the EPUB online reader:

To select by page range, click the printer icon for “Print to PDF” found at the bottom right.

  • If printing/downloading-to-PDF more than the current page, determine page numbers by viewing the page number displayed by the reader at the bottom right.
  • If the page numbers seem off, see below.
  • It's okay to use page numbers like iii, iv, xi, etc. as applicable.

To download the current chapter, again click the printer icon for "Print to PDF" and choose "Current Chapter".

  • The Chapter Download button is not available in the EPUB reader.

If you’re just trying to print:

  • Open the PDF file created by one of the two approaches above and print it.
  • Developer note: We’ve found that students today print very little—the digital natives are very comfortable having documents online and are concerned with saving trees! Given this, our focus shifted to Print to PDF, knowing there is always the option, once the PDF is created, to send it to a printer.

Citation is automatically included:

  • Both “Print to PDF” and “Chapter Download” include a full citation at the bottom of each page.
  • You can change your citation preference under Settings at the top right of the screen.

PDFs are searchable:

  • PDFs generated by Print or Chapter/Page-Download are searchable.  >See More

If the page numbers seem off:

  • Typically, the page number indicated by the reader in the top-right corner will match the page number shown on the book’s page
Example of the page number in the reader
  • However, the correct page numbers for some books cannot be correctly interpreted.
  • If correct page numbers can’t be interpreted, “consecutive page numbers” are used instead, where the cover = page 1, the next page = page 2, etc.
  • If this is the case, it is important to indicate the desired page range by checking the start and end page, noting the page number indicated by the reader - not the page number shown on the book's page
  • If you encounter a book for which the reader does not show either:
  1. the same page number shown on the book’s page, or
  2. “consecutive page numbers” as described above,
Then please report the book to the Technical Support Team. If you would like to contact us, please do so by submitting a case on this form.

Print/download page limits:

  • For each book, there is a limit on the number of pages that can be printed/downloaded.
  • Both "Print to PDF" and "Chapter Download" deduct in the same way based on the number of pages printed/downloaded.
  • If you try to print/download a chapter that is more pages than the remaining pages allowed for the book, it will not print/download. You may then use the “Print to PDF” option to print however many pages you have left.
  • For many books, the print/download limit is 40% of the book's pages
    • So, for example, if the book is 200 pages long, you would be able to print up to 80 pages.
  • Some publishers have chosen not to allow copy/print on their titles. For these titles, users should use read online or full download instead
  • For most titles, print/download limits reset after 24 hours. This does not apply to Course Reserve titles.
  • The print/download limit for a book, including the number of allowed pages remaining, are displayed on the book's Detail Page. To see this information while reading a book, click the book shaped icon within the reader, "Book Details", to display the details in the side panel. > See More
