The trigger events described above apply to triggering an:
- NL loan
- When a book has been purchased with the NL access model, that book has a maximum days-of-use allotment per year. When a patron uses an NL book sufficiently (see trigger events above), it counts as a loan (or duration-of-use deduction) against the book.
- Extended Access STL, auto-upgrade, or auto-purchase
- Librarians can enable Extended Access so that when books owned with a 1-user or 3-user access model are already fully in use, or a book owned with an NL model has no more days-of-use available for the year, a patron's sufficient use of the book (see trigger events above) will initiate an STL, auto-upgrade, or auto-purchase of the book for the patron.
- DDA STL or auto-purchase
- DDA-discoverable books are un-owned books that your librarians have made visible to patrons. When a patron uses a DDA-discoverable book sufficiently (see trigger events above), it triggers an STL or auto-purchase of the book.
5-minute free browse:
- NL and DDA-discoverable books, as well as books that are already fully in use if Extended Access is enabled, can be free-browsed for up to 5 minutes, without causing a trigger.
- There is no limit to the number of pages that can be viewed within the 5 minute free-browse period.
- The 5-minute free browse period is counted from the start of activity and is based on activity. There is a 30-minute inactivity timeout. If a patron has multiple free browse sessions within a 24-hour period, and those sessions add up to or exceed 5 minutes, a view time trigger will occur. Examples:
- Scenario 1: Patron reads a few pages in 2 minutes and is then inactive for 15 minutes. Patron is active again (turning page) and the title is triggered (because it would be seen as essentially a 17-minute browse). Free view time logged in the usage report will show as 17 minutes before the trigger event, even though some of that time was inactive time.
- Scenario 2: Patron reads a few pages in 2 minutes and is then inactive for 30+ minutes. Patron access times out (message provided to patron if they try to access again, for example if they try to turn the page) and title is not triggered. Free view time logged in the usage report will only show the initial 2 minutes of activity.
- Scenario 3: Patron reads a few pages in 2 minutes and is then inactive for 4 minutes. Patron attempts to turn a page after 4 minutes of inactivity, and since the reader time is now over the 5 minute browse, they are prompted to sign in to trigger a loan (based on the library's settings). The user does not sign in and the title is not triggered, but the read time is logged in usage reports as a 6 minute free view.

Scenario 4: Patron reads for 2 minutes and then closes the book. In a few hours, the patron opens the book again and reads for 3 more minutes. When the total reader time within 24 hours for this patron reaches the 5-minute limit, they are prompted to sign in to trigger a loan (based on the library's settings). The user signs in, and the title is triggered. The Free View read time is logged in the usage report as separate entries for each session.
