As part of the ProQuest Dissertations and Theses service, our staff editors carefully compile relevant bibliographic information about each dissertation or theses that is published. That bibliographic data is used as the basis for MARC records.

Free MARC Records for Publishing Partners

Universities that actively publish dissertations and theses with ProQuest Dissertations and Theses are entitled to free MARC records for their submitted graduate works. The records are machine-generated and can serve as a good starting point for your catalogers. Your catalogers can repurpose our MARC records to describe holdings in your physical collection or institutional repository.

As a further convenience, ProQuest Dissertations and Theses will add a URL to the 856u tag that will link to the bibliographic record within the ProQuest Dissertations Theses database. (Upon request, records in the USMARC format can be delivered without the URL.)

MARC Records Formats Available

We offer a variety of formats for MARC data including:

MARCXML format:

USMARC format:

MARC21/RDA format:

Permitted Uses of ProQuest-Produced MARC Records

MARC records generated by ProQuest Dissertations and Theses may also be added to an electronic index or OPAC in the state in which they are delivered. If the ProQuest record has been modified or enhanced by a library, then it may be loaded into a bibliographic utility.
