The Cecil Papers is a major collection of early-modern historical documents from the reigns of Elizabeth I and James I/VI. William Cecil (1521-1598), Lord Burghley and his son Robert Cecil (1563-1612), First Earl of Salisbury were at the heart of events during one of the most dynamic periods in Western history. One of Elizabeth’s I’s closest advisors, William Cecil was both her Lord High Treasurer and her Secretary of State – a position also held by his son who continued to serve Elizabeth and her successor, James I. More than 150,000 pages have been digitized in full color and high resolution to create a definitive online archive of almost 30,000 manuscript documents written by some of the most significant figures of Elizabethan and Jacobean history. These are accompanied by the complete Calendar of the Cecil Papers, featuring summaries and/or transcripts of many documents and two eighteenth-century volumes of selected transcriptions all of which have been re-keyed to a high level of searchable accuracy.
