Patrologia Latina is a comprehensive, closed collection and is no longer in active development. The last time it was updated was 2004. At that time, it was developed to meet existing accessibility standards, though new standards have since been introduced. Automated testing has been conducted on the core pages of this site to uncover accessibility gaps against the current WCAG 2.1 A and AA accessibility standards. These pages include the homepage, the search page, search results page, marked list page, and table of contents pages. Findings of this testing are summarized below, along with information about how to make the most of Patrologia Latina’s accessibility features.
Accessibility features and gaps
Users of Patrologia Latina should be able to:
- navigate most of the website using just a keyboard.
- go directly to main content areas on the page using skip links.
- use access keys to quickly navigate to key sections of the site without using a mouse.
- view the heading structure of most pages and use them to navigate with a screen reader.
There may be some parts of this website that are not fully accessible:
- this site has a fixed width: text and elements will not reflow to accommodate screen size.
- heading levels are skipped or missing on some pages.
- alternative text is missing for some decorative icons.
- some form labels are missing or not properly linked to their corresponding controls.
- color contrast for some links do not meet minimum standards.

Accessibility of this platform
Sitewide Accessibility Features
The sidebar of the page has links to Table of Contents, Marked List, Lexicon, Help, More Information, and Search History. Aside from the homepage, there also is a “back” button that will take you to the previous page.
At the foot of every page you will find links to sitewide information, including the Privacy policy and Accessibility page, and a Webmaster email link.
Using Access Keys
You can use access keys as part of keystroke combinations (keyboard shortcuts), making it possible to quickly navigate to important features in this site without using a mouse:
- 0 = Accessibility Statement
- 1 = Home Page
- 2 = Help
- 3 = Search All
- 6 = BHL GoTo
- 7 = Lexicon
- C = Table of Contents
- L = More Information
- U = Search History
- Y = Marked List

Please note that access keys work slightly differently across browsers and operating systems:
- Firefox: Hold the ALT and SHIFT keys down before pressing the relevant access keys.
- Chrome: Hold ALT and press the relevant access key.
- Mac users should hold down the Ctrl while following the instructions above.
Note: access keys may not be available to users of some screen reader software where they conflict with reserved keystroke combinations (e.g. Window Eyes).
Accessibility Gaps
Site is not responsive
This site was designed for use by laptop and desktop computers and is not optimized for small screens. Text and elements will not reflow to accommodate screen size and if you use Patrologia Latina on a small screen, you will need to scroll in multiple directions to see all content on the page.
Missing or skipped headings
Headings are employed throughout the site to make it easier to navigate, especially with a screen reader. Even so, headings are missing entirely on the table of contents page, and some heading levels are skipped on the homepage, marked list, search and search results pages.
Accessibility Testing
Patrologia Latina code was checked for accessibility using automated and manual checks:
- Color Contrast Analyzer provided by WebAIM
- High Contrast Chrome extension
- Keyboard-access manual testing and assessment
- WAVE (Web Accessibility Evaluation tool) provided by WebAIM
Patrologia Latina was tested on the latest version of Chrome on a Windows computer.
