Why is there a word limit on the length of my abstract?

We have a limit of 775 words on abstracts in order to conserve space both in the print index and on PQDT. In the event that we receive an abstract which exceeds the word limit, our editorial staff will shorten it to meet our requirement. We attempt to preserve the cohesion of an abstract by omitting text which does not deal with a paper’s main hypothesis/hypotheses and conclusions (introductory or background information, lists of analytical methods, etc).
