When and how do I search Census or Books?
If you choose search Census, two search methods are available to you: you can either browse census records by location, or you can perform a search on census records to find names. All matches will be returned to you in the form of a Results List. From your results, you can access the Census Index to view more detailed information about your selection, and from there you can access the Census Image, which will display the scanned census materials. Note: Not all census years have been indexed yet, only the ones that have been indexed are searchable. Click on the "What's New" link on the homepage of HeritageQuest® Online to see what indexes are available.
Within Search Books, you have several specific search options. If you are looking for information on a particular person or family, you should use the Search People option. If you are looking for information on towns, cities, or regions, you should use the Search Places option. If you are interested in browsing or searching our list of titles, you should select the Publications option. Search Publications also allows you to search books by subject.
After you have selected your search, you can enter your search terms in the relevant search field. For example, if you are looking for information on the family name of Lopez, you can access the Search People option and enter the name ''Lopez'' in the search field ''Person Name(s)''. When you have entered all the terms you would like, click on the ''Search'' button. Your search terms will be compared against the scanned text and bibliographic citations for all books in the HeritageQuest® Online database. All matches will be returned to you in the form of a Results List. From your Results List, you can access a more detailed Citation for any result, or you can look at the Page Images for that result.
Whether you select Search Books or Search Census, there are several ways to save your results for future reference. You can email, print, and/or download both your results and your notes to yourself. You can also download images to your hard drive for future reference. Additionally, your Search History will contain details on your previous searches. Previous searches and your notebook are only available within the current session, so make sure you save it or e-mail it to yourself before you logout or your session expires.
