Question:
Error 1013?
Answer:
What happened?
What does this mean?
What should I do?
(Library Administrator Instructions)

What happened?

The following ProQuest error:"Error 1013 ProQuest cannot give you access because we cannot place an authentication cookie on your browser." will display when you attempt to access ProQuest and the ProQuest authentication system is unable to place a "cookie" on your browser which allows ProQuest to verify you and keep track of the things you save and search and access while using ProQuest. This is a common error which occurs when attempting to access ProQuest.

What does this mean?

If you are a student or library patron, this error is common and should not alarm you. Most often, this error occurs because your computer or web browser has its security setting set very high and therefore will not allow ProQuest to set the cookie we use to verify your computer as being allowed to access ProQuest content.

What should I do?

The best way for you to try to diagnose what might be going on if you get this message would be the following:

  • Check your computer and web browser settings.  To ensure you will be able to successfully access ProQuest products, please click on our Browser Health Check.

Unfortunately, because every computer, browser, and security program is set up differently, ProQuest Support cannot provide authentication assistance or information to end-users. Your library or institution likely has a help desk which can assist you with changing your configuration so that you can access ProQuest. Please contact them for assistance.

Library Administrator Instructions

If you are a Library Administrator, this error indicates a failure to authenticate because ProQuest cannot set or read back the authentication cookie we set which allows the ProQuest web client to verify authentication at multiple points during your session. This can be caused by a number of scenarios, such as the following common ones:

  • The web browser you are using to access has its security settings set too high. This is very common.
  • The computer you are using has a third-party security application which is blocking the authentication and session cookies.
  • A proxy server or security policy is not allowing the authentication and session cookies to be passed or read.

If your site or account is experiencing this error on a number of computer stations or terminals, please contact ProQuest Technical Support so that we may help you to resolve the problem.

If none of the above scenarios or suggestions seems to apply, please contact ProQuest Customer Service so that we may help you to resolve the problem.
